I love my supportive, shiny-happy linkshell. I really, really do.

See, I decided to unlock Scholar in FFXI today. I've been meaning to do that for awhile and I figured, why not? Besides, once you get past a certain level, everyone is looking for SCH in party. Anyway, despite this being a job you have to stroll through a lot of the big bad "Everything that aggros can kill you if you're solo no matter what level you are" past to unlock, this shouldn't have been a massive problem for me. After all, I've got White Mage at 52. (Or is it 53 now? I honestly don't remember. Anyway.) Sneak and Invisible FTW, right?

WRONG. See, the issue with this job class is that to unlock it, you need to be able to use one of the following three abilities: Manafont, Chainspell or Azure Lore. These are the two-hours for Black Mage, Red Mage and Blue Mage respectively. Benediction - WHM's two-hour - does not cut it. Therefore, for at least some of the jaunting ... no Sneak. No Invisible. Not with BLM only at 37, which with a WHM subjob means WHM spells at level 16 and up. So ... alternate ways of getting through the area without getting dead, at least partway. ...Doom.

Seriously, nothing bad happened. It was a bit of a trek, mind. First thing I had to do was buy Rolanberries - long story involving being able to get the stack of items I needed for the quest from a NPC in return for twelve stacks of the bastard things. Thankfully, I made best use of the recent gil-frenzy Starlight Festival bollocks before they, as my LS put it, 'nerfed the drop rate', so ... yeah, whatever, I'm still good for gil and I got my Rolanberries. Then, as WHM, I pootled into and through Battalia Downs of EEEEEEEVIL to get to Eldieme Necropolis of Ago, activated the quest, then ran through Rolanberry Fields of EEEEEEEEEEVIL (right in the middle of a bloody campaign battle, w00t) to get to Crawler's Nest of Ago. Found the relevant NPC, traded my Rolanberry stacks, got my Vellum, Warped to the present. Changed jobs, went back to Jeuno, back to Batallia Downs of EEEEEEEEEVIL.

Now, at first I tried my chocobo whistle, just in case I could just get a ride there - even my slow stupid bird is better than nothing - but no dice. So I pulled out my other purchase of the day: silent oil and prism powder. These serve the same purpose as Sneak and Invisible respectively, and are about as unreliable at times, read: they wear at the most inconvenient moments. However, I managed to stick to spots where I could run and hide to reapply the relevant effects if they did wear, and got to where I needed to be with no problems. Traded the items, blew my two-hour (not that I ever use Manafont anyway, though I sometimes wish WHM did have it, given the times that my party has taken on a mob too strong for it and done the full wipe thing because they didn't let me rest for MP), unlocked the job, warped back to the present-day again.

Now, the point. After all this, I went to cheer to my linkshell about my accomplishment. The response I got? "Enjoy a job that doesn't let you have a spell 'til level 4 and is useless 'til level 10..." They did admit that the job is great at higher levels, mind, but ... c'mon. I was all excited. There could have been at least a "Good for you!" or "((Congratulations!))" *sigh*

In other news, my sinuses are killing me, I'm still snurfly as hell, I can barely lie down without needing to hack my lungs up, which means I can't sleep until I'm literally flat out exhausted and then my sleep patterns get screwier than usual. *whine* When will the stupid flu end? However, I have Lipton chicken noodle cup-o-soup, my favourite comfort food in such situations, so it's not all bad. I should forage for dinner, though. Cup-o-soup is great, but it's not ... you know, solid food.

I suggest a Spicy, beefy pho. If you know of any good Vietnamese restaurants, especially that will provide you with take away, that's
gonna be my two cents. Mmmmm Pho.

Wish my Singapore noodles would have turned out last night. *pouts*

A linkshell is sort of like a guild, I think - a group of individuals on the server who help each other out and go on missions and stuff together. The one I'm with at the moment helped me get my first level cap quest, my Dragoon flag quest and my Rank 5 mission. They're good people, more or less. :)
