Monster Player Kill (MPK)

So I went onto FFXI because I couldn't sleep - not with the aching and the stuffed-up head. And I found that my garden had sprouted, so I could afford to say that I was off to Kahzam and not leaving until I got my lvl 30. Not that I intended to get all the way to lvl 30 today, but lvl 29 might have been nice. And I was so damn close...
It actually went pretty well for awhile. I wasn't even all the way to Jeuno yet before I got a party invite over in Yhoator Jungle (next one over from Yuhtunga Jungle, where I was the other day). It took me awhile to find camp once I got to the zones in question, but I eventually managed. We got some good XP, and I hit lvl 28 but couldn't use Firaga very effectively because these ugly lizard things that would have indubitably munched us all were standing in the way. Still, I learned how to use skillchains and magic bursts (long story, and boring if you don't play) so that was helpful. I just need to read up a bit more on how to do the whole magic burst thing. Anyway, as happens when it's getting late, the party started breaking up, and people were getting replaced, and all was good. Or so you'd think.
The original party leader, who'd plucked me up all the way from Sauromugue Champaign (to give you an idea, once I got the request to join their party, I had to get to Jeuno, get on the airship, pootle through Kahzam and then hop a chocobo to ride through Yuhtunga Jungle to get to where they were - that's many, many zones, and my party flag wasn't even up), had to leave. I got party lead. I didn't want party lead. No one warned me I was getting party lead. I know how to lead a party in theory, but in practice, I'd rather not start in the middle of Yhoator Jungle. If I'm going to learn to lead a party, I'm learning in the bloody Dunes like normal people. So I asked if anyone else wanted lead. Our White Mage, with whom I'd shared the airship ride, said yes! And then, when I handed him party lead, he said there was going to have to be some party restructuring, then sent me a tell:
<< WhiteMage: Get ready to run I hate leaches
Spelling all his. I asked for clarification, and he just repeated himself. I had a feeling I knew what was going to happen, but I didn't really believe it. I mean, people really aren't such arseholes as to make the puller pull a mob, run and then disband the party, especially not when they're the main healers ... are they?
So the WHM leader ordered the puller to pull, and there was a mob right nearby, so the puller pulled it. And the WHM made a run for it. The melees were getting smacked down, and the tank nearly died. I threw a quick cure at him, took some hate and consequently some damage from the jumped-up spring onion we were fighting, then looked at my sidebar of "Where/how are the party members?" and noticed that our WHM leader was in the next jungle over now. And then? Then all of a sudden, that sidebar said, "Solo", and only showed my own status. Yep. WHM lead arsehole let the puller pull, ran away to let them die, and then disbanded. All I could do at that point was warp out back to Jeuno. I feel horrible about it - not that there was anything I could have done, mind you, except died myself, but ... I was apparently the only one who got any warning. And all because our new tank sucked and one guy who'd just joined wanted to leave after just a few mobs. Okay, annoying, but no reason to MPK 2/3 of a party.
I am annoyed about this for a few reasons:
1) He probably MPK'd the whole bunch. That's just evil.
2) I was 550 xp away from lvl 29 and he knew it. If he had to be a fucker, and thought I was worth saving, couldn't he at least have hung on for another couple of mobs?
3) I now feel horrifically guilty that I couldn't save the rest of the party. I mean, I only have Warp I. No Warp II, no Escape ... and Escape wouldn't have helped once he'd disbanded the party anyway. He probably got them killed, and I let him because I didn't know what else to do.
4) I can't help feeling a little bit proud and/or flattered that this total arsehole at least unbent enough to save the people he felt were worth saving, and that I was apparently that one. So I'm a good player ... but I let that happen. I didn't even have the presence of mind to text-shout "RUN! THE WHM'S GONNA FUCK US ALL OVER!"
On the whole, I have not seen such an abominable arsehole in this game ever. And it just goes to show that, if you're a good player, you might get saved when an arsehole takes charge of your party and decides to MPK the party just 'cos he takes 'you suck and you're leeching XP off my hard work' as a justification for being a dick.
