Having geeky friends is a good thing at times like these.

Yesterday was no fun at all. After the complete borkage of the Frankenbox, I had to go off to the dentist, and it turned out that I was completely wrong about what time the appointment was supposed to be - I thought 2:20 for some reason, and it was actually 2. However, they still saw me, despite my being 15 minutes late. Which I suppose is a good thing on the whole, but honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if my getting the time wrong was my subconscious freaking out about having a tooth ripped out.

Because, let's face it, that's what the tiny Indian woman did. Well, this was after jabbing me with one of those huge needles they use for novocaine injection not once but twice - once in the hinge of the jaw and once right at the tooth. Also after she told me that there was a chance that the tooth would fracture and they'd have to take it out in stages, or that they'd have to lift the gum away or take out some of the bone. Just what I don't want to hear. If they have to do it, fine, I'm numb anyway, but don't make me think about it. As it turned out, it was needless worry anyway. She wrenched at the tooth for awhile in a way that told me I was in for a world of pain when the novocaine wore off, and then out it came. No big, except for the numb half of my mouth, the pain that followed, the occasional swallowing of my own blood and having to bite down jaw-achingly hard on a gauze pad for a half-hour. At least it's out now and doesn't hurt a whole lot, though I have to rinse my mouth with salt water for a couple of days. Remembering gargling the shit as an aid to sore throats at summer camp, I know how much fun that's not going to be.

Anyway, I then came home and tried to sort something out with the Frankenbox. That didn't work out very well and I wound up having to reinstall Windows. That went smoothly and took care of that weird "nothing works" borkage, but now there are other problems. Lots of other problems. It still can't see my E drive. The graphics driver won't load. It won't connect to the internet no matter what I do. In short, it's just been turned into a rather expensive paperweight.

Still, I have options, thanks to my geeky friends. Kyr suggests cracking the case and checking the cables connecting my E drive to the rest of the machine - apparently, sometimes things get dirty or loosened and presto, no more E drive. [livejournal.com profile] dodgyhoodoo suggests pulling the wireless antenna thing and reconnecting it before trying to connect again, because sometimes the computer won't recognise it as there unless you do. It occurs to me that computers, for all people say they're inanimate objects, are stupid picky little bastards, lending weight to a theory of universal animism. Everything's alive, and sometimes shits up your life for fun.

If the above doesn't work ... well, I have no damn clue what I'm gonna do. Much as I love the self-built DIY machine thing, I suppose [livejournal.com profile] dodgyhoodoo has a point when he says that maybe what I really need is a factory model system that works. Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] dodgyhoodoo points out that his not putting Zim back together wasn't so much him being lazy as his computer basically fragging everything he tried to connect to it. Yet more proof that computers love to hate us.

So here I am, in bed because I'm still miserably tired, typing this out on iMisc's rather sucky keyboard. I at least have the music on iStress - not much, but at least some of the good stuff. And on the whole, I'm reasonably confident in my ability to rebuild the Frankenbox so that it in some way works. But that's going to have to wait 'til tomorrow. Now I'm going to see if fresh air helps my feeling sucky by venturing out into the cold for smokes. Life's fab, no?
