Cause of Death: Quest From Hell

The problem with not having many friends who are into FFXI is that sometimes there's nobody to warn you when you're about to get in over your head. Kyr's fab, and it's nice to have someone to whinge to who understands, but given that she's never done the quest that's currently kicking my arse...
See, I've been doing this nice little quest where you have to trade clay to stone monuments to record what's written on them and take them back to this old party in Selbina. There are many rewards to this - each tablet returned (and you can only do one at a time, which is a pain in the arse but never mind) nets you anywhere between 800-3000 gil, with two high-level areas netting you 10k gil a pop, and once you've managed 15 of the 17 monuments, you get a map of Crawler's Nest. Maps are good, so I've been working my way through this particular quest for shits and giggles. I thought it'd be fairly easy, actually - all I'd have to do was ride a chocobo up to the monuments so I wouldn't die in the rough areas, take a quick impression, then warp out to a safe area where I could grab another chocobo and head for Selbina. However, obviously the developers have taken this into account, because it really is NOT THAT EASY.
The two 10k gil monuments are only accessible through areas where you cannot ride a chocobo - the one in Batallia Downs goes via Eldieme Necropolis and the one in Sauromunge Champaign requires a trip through Garlaige Citadel. These are areas you do not want to go anywhere near at my level, so those two are out for awhile. However, since they're not necessary for the Crawler's Nest map, they can wait. But the other ones should be fine, right? Wrong.
The one in Jugner Forest, for example. Now, I find that I'm now at a level where I could nearly survive Jugner if I'm careful. However, when I rode up to that monument, I found it guarded by a pair of Forest Tigers, each checking at 'Even Match', which means 'Even Individually Will Kick My Arse'. So the Jugner monument's out. Then I tried the one in Pashhow Marshlands - another one I could nearly survive solo. But no, there's a bloody great Malboro in the way. The monument's a little out of its way, so I might have been alright, but when I tried to take the clay impression, it wouldn't take. I have no idea why - maybe because it was raining. And then the Malboro moved in an aggressive manner, so I thought 'bugger this' and warped the hell out. So much for those areas.
So I thought, "Okay, I'll go to Bastok and do the Gustaberg ones. Fine, I have to go through Dangruf Wadi to get to the one in North Gustaberg and it's another one I can't ride a chocobo through, but no big deal - I've done some reading and there's not a lot out there that can hurt me. A couple of tough goblins, but they can be avoided. And I can farm Wadi Hares, which is good." Um ... yeah. I finally managed to figure out how to navigate that damn area and was just at the exit point when I noticed that there were two goblins checking at 'Even Match' right in my way. High-level magic-using goblins. Oh, goodie. So I ran like unholy fuck and managed to zone into North Gustaberg without taking more than 100 points of damage. Well, seeing as one of the fucking things threw Stonega at me, I count myself lucky. So I zoned out and escaped those goblins ... only to find yet more goblins. Lots of them. Tramping all over the place. So I put one to sleep and snuck around it ... only to have another one decide to kick my arse. So I'm fighting that one when the one I'd put to sleep wakes up and decides to help its friend. Cue one dead Deathgnome. Bugger. So that's another one I'm going to have to level up for before I attempt it.
So far I'm running out of options. I can still do East Sarutabaruta, because I've gone to that one with no problem before. South Gustaberg is another one I've tramped to while attempting another quest, so I can do that one before taking my leave of Bastok for awhile. Then there's East and West Ronfaure, where you only get a tough mob if you're doing a San D'Oria high level mission. I've figured out how to get into the one at La Theine Plateau, which should be fine if I manage to avoid Ordelle's Caves... Or alternatively, I can just stick to the easy ones and then level up in Qufim for a little while longer. At least the 800 gil each for the easy ones is coming in handy, and I did get one high-level area out of the way - despite an abundance of Evil Weapons running around, I managed to get the one in Rolanberry Fields without a problem. That netted me 3k gil, which I summarily blew on getting myself Aeroga - yay for Area of Effect spells.
In other news, my morning started off with me deciding that some oatmeal and a nice cup of herbal tea would be a nice way to start the day. However, Yuki decided that she was going to attempt a flying tackle of me as I moved to the study with my full bowl of oatmeal and cup of tea. The tea sloshed, but I dropped the bowl and it, and my oatmeal, went smash-splat all over the floor. I've cleaned it up, but am not happy about it. This was hours ago and now the cat, after hiding and napping for most of the day, is being even more of an attention-suck. It's going to be difficult for her when I go back to work.
Of course, I have also hidden and napped for most of the day - well, after breakfast, at least until 2pm or so. I'm still pretty consistently exhausted. It sucks, but I suppose there's not a lot I can do about it. Still a week to wait before I can go back to the GP and ask if the gastro specialist has any clues as to what's wrong with me.
Tomorrow, I must go and ship Christmas presents to Missouri. Yeah, I know it's not even December yet, but the post takes forever around this time of year. So
ilyena_sylph and
darkdanc3r, if you want anything added to the parcel like sweets and so on, please let me know in the next 24 hours or so.
Now, though, I'm going to Waitrose for cola. I'm not sure what's happening with dinner, but either way it's going to wait until
dodgyhoodoo returns from the pub with
weaselbitch (I might join them, depending on how I'm feeling; hate being ill) so I might do well to get real food too. I'd like to manage a full three meals for once - wouldn't that be a hoot?
