I finished Tipping the Velvet last night, which just goes to prove that if I really, actually, like a book, my reading speed is vastly increased. It was a fantastic book and now I'm wondering if the BBC thing did it any justice at all. Well, my favourite part was the language; I guess I'm a sucker for the first person singular. It always feels so personal, and brings home a book that's all about how someone feels and the motivations for seemingly screwed-up actions so very well. Besides, reading about just how hard it was to be a homosexual in the run-up to the 20th century in England is really interesting. I mean, not that it's so terribly easy now, in the dawning of the 21st century, but at least we don't throw gay people into 'reformatories'. New slang (well, sort of) is also always fun.

Hmm. Now, what next? Come payday next, there's a buy 2, get 1 half-price on The Secret History and Lolita, both of which are on my list, but that's a week away. I suppose I should finish Neutron Star, but I think I'm going to go with the Muriel Gray for the time being; give the Niven a rest for awhile, see if I don't get a little more in the mood for it later.

It's pissing it down with rain, and my brolly's still at the office. Woe. I think I'm going to do the route that involves the least amount of walking; read, 125 to Southgate, Piccadilly Line to Holborn, Central Line to Chancery Lane. I know the 221 to Bounds Green is quicker for the Piccadilly Line, but Southgate guarantees I get a seat. Anyway, best be moving.

I really, really liked the BBC miniseries.

The lead actress got a little annoying at times, but it was excellently done. Moreover, I liked the end better. It ends much the same, but the set up doesn't have the deus ex machina feel I felt the book had.
