*ahem* This is a test of the Emergency Stress-Out System. If this had been a real emergency, the sound you are about to hear would be followed by the sound of several pieces of office equipment hitting a wall.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

Sorry about that. See, I just got a phone call from a nice enough lady who apparently spoke to my bloody consultant last week, when he told her that if she got a referral letter, she could have an appointment on Monday. Yes, as in the terrifically overbooked Monday clinic that I was trying to get out of further overbooking yesterday. The man has absolutely no idea! And yet he's promised this patient so I have to book the damn thing now. No wonder we're running the NHS into the ground.

Then there was the man who told me off for booking his wife an appointment at 9:10 am, stating that I should know better than to book such early appointments for people who live in rural areas. (Rural? In my hospital's catchement zone? What's your definition of rural -- only one Starbucks?) Apparently, I should have a little map with pins in it stuck on my wall so that when I get referrals, I can work out where the patient lives and how long it will take them to get there and then book appointments accordingly. 45 minutes total that conversation took before I finally managed to shove his wife into a technically nonexistent appointment slot, shut him up about Canada (if I'm from Montreal, I'm from the Frenchy bit that hates the English and he used to live in Toronto and do I remember the ice storm?) and finally got him off the bloody line.

And again, pages 1-5 of the Metro about the tsunami -- or more specifically, the moment of silence we all had yesterday -- and on page 6, the fact that the NHS is closing beds and dropping staff because of financial difficulties. Well, if the NHS manages its finances anything like my bloody consultant manages clinic lists, I'm not in the least surprised.

Had a good night last night at least. Girlie chats and meeting new people and so forth. Whee.

Now if you'll excuse me, I think I want to go shoot someone. But I can't because I have to go and manage the temp, if she's actually turned up. I hate this place sometimes.

Yes, just sometimes. Otherwise, I wouldn't still be here.
