Got bored. Diaryhopped more than usual. Note to James Bowman ... it's N-E-I-L-S-O-N, and if you want to find out just what TLAS abomination I'm working on and any other details of my writerly life, ignore the so-called insanity that I call a normal life and go here.

I had a bit of a bad day, except for the being woken a half hour before my alarm usually goes off. That was by request, actually, as Nakanaide wanted to ring and thought that 7:00 a.m. my time would be a good time. I thought it wouldn't give any chance for a leisurely chat and changed it to 6:00. Which was nice -- better than waking up to "mee-mee-mee-meep", anyway.

Then the public transport hell. Gotta love the public transport hell. I managed to catch my train but the District line was buggered ... and proceeded to get more buggered when the signal failure hit Putney Bridge. Being trapped in a Tube train for a half-hour is not fun.

While I bitch about the menial nature of the work I do, I have to admit to getting a certain amount of satisfaction out of it ... albeit mostly when the day's over. I don't normally pick up the phones (I rarely get a chance to and focus on the typing anyway, since that's what I was technically hired for and am better at than most other things), but we were short-staffed today so I picked up more calls than usual. It's not like I haven't done it before, either, and I know how to behave -- standoffish enough so you don't get walked all over by someone, not so rude that anyone has cause to fire you. I mean, if the doctors had their way, anyone else's reports (even the urgent ones) would be shoved to the back of the queue for their reports (even if it's just a potentially broken little toe). You can't let them get away with that or, between searching for files that they could easily find themselves and shuffling around the tapes until you get to the report that guy nagged about on the phone ten minutes ago, you'd never get any work done.

Now, I thought I was adequate. Not bad, but not something to sit up and take notice of, either. One of my colleagues seems to think otherwise. She commented that I was good on the phones. What else could I say but "thanks"? But what else could I think but, "damn, looks like I get phone duty more often, like I haven't got enough to do". Still, it's nice to know I'm not a one-trick pony in the eyes of my peers.

Turns out that I do have Saturday plans after all -- I hadn't realised (or remembered, maybe) that Shinji meant this weekend for the day-trip to Worthing. I found out that he had meant this weekend via e-mail this afternoon. But as long as I'm back in time for Sunday dinner with my mother, it should be fine. Next weekend, though, I am going to go to Full Tilt, and blowing next half-Friday in Camden finding something to wear. Last new clothes I bought were three pairs of socks, and I could use something a little more exciting to wear out anyway.

This half-Friday, though, shopping for something to give to my mother for Mother's Day. No idea what yet, but I'm sure I'll think of something. I was really pleased I chose so well for her at Christmas this year, so maybe I'll have the same insight for this present too.
