Short break for food while I ... well ... complain and squee in equal measure about WTF ARE FFXI PLAYERS LEARNING?!?
I ended up back in the sodding Jungles again for a lvl-30 level synch party with my Dragoon. Not that the party wasn't good (because on the whole it was), or that I didn't level (lvl 32 to lvl 34 in quite short order) or even that I died horribly (one person did die - our other DRG - but that was one of those unfortunate accidents that happen when a Goblin Smithy is spamming Goblin Rush). However, part of the reason for that was me subbing Dancer and us having a power leveller because our WHM knew jack all about the job. Actually, both our magic-users were clueless.
The White Mage: So much with the spam-curing. A few enfeebles on the mobs (well, was subbing Red Mage, so I guess enfeebles might be their wider range of experience), but mostly just cures. Which ... okay, I get that WHMs are supposed to keep players alive, but there's more to it than keeping the HP high with Cure of various levels! For instance, if a lizard-type mob has used Plague Breath, you cast Poisona on the affected member of party so you're not throwing Cure III at them every twenty seconds until the poisoning effect wears off! Poisona is not a hard spell! You get it at level 7 or 9 or something as a WHM! When a party member is poisoned, you remove the poison effect! It's not rocket science!
(Okay, so maybe I get a little aerated about this kind of thing specifically because I've got 59 levels of WHM and know how to measure someone's HP bar to tell if they're poisoned. But it's still not hard.)
The Scholar: For starters ... he was subbing Bard. I have no idea why the hell he was subbing Bard, but there you have it. No extra spells, no extra mana ... nothing. SCH is a magic-intensive job, so why he subbed one of the buff/enfeeble semi-melee job classes I have no idea.
I sure as hell don't know why he was meleeing. With a wand. You stand at the back and nuke or heal or both if you're playing SCH! You do not wade into a melee! The only magic-user class that can legitimately be found in the melee is Blue Mage, because all their magic abilities are close range. RDM can generally get away with it, though in higher levels it seems like they stand back, enfeeble the mobs, buff the party members and backup heal. But BLM, WHM and SCH should be at the back of the group, as far out of Area of Effect range as possible while still being close enough to cast spells on melee players/mobs.
SCH meleeing. Shite.
Right. I need to go level up DNC some more. Y'know, to the point where if I go and level up DRG some more, I won't have a gimped subjob. At least this'll be easier. Tele-Holla, ride to Selbina, change jobs ... ooh, I should check on armour first. Anyway, it'll kill the rest of the evening.
