Note on FFXI - if something checks as "easy prey" ... this in no way guarantees that it is easy prey.

After earning in excess of 9k gil by farming with my mule (currently lvl 6 Hume Monk named Michaela) and some other bits and bobs, I decided that I would quit San d'Oria for awhile. Why? Because I used some of that money and bought 12 packets of herb seeds, and I now want to grow them. Depending on what I turn up, this could be immensely profitable. And it's really no hardship to warp out to San d'Oria again to check on my chocobo. A little expensive in terms of chocobo fees to get back, though. Never mind - it'll probably be worth it in the end.

However, riding through La Theine Plateau (because, oddly, the easiest and safest way to get from San d'Oria to Windurst is via Jeuno and changing chocobos along the way, because I'm still a little wary of crossing Buburimu Peninsula on my own, despite the fact that I'm now 'even match' with just about everything out there) I ran into something called a Battering Ram. This checks as 'easy prey' now that I'm at lvl 25, and it's rare. Not Named Mob rare, but only has two spawn points. So I figured, hey, why not try taking it down?

The correct response to that question is "Because you're going to get your arse kicked, that's why..."

Actually, I didn't do too badly, on the whole. Oh, sure, it smashed me into a sticky paste, but not before I came pretty close to offing it. I'd have probably won if I hadn't been so shy about the AoE spells - there was nothing else nearby so I could've risked it. (Oh yeah; I'm high enough level now for Waterga, Aeroga and Poisonga, with Firaga still to come. I love being a BLM sometimes.) Still, not entirely dissimilar to the time I was walking (again, through La Theine Plateau) and saw an Air Elemental that checked as 'easy prey' and proceeded to invite it to kick my little Taru butt.

Still, it's amusing - I can now ride through Jugner Forest - that place which I dread - and check various of the mobs and get 'decent challenge' or even 'easy prey' on Forest Tigers. Now, after my experience with the Battering Ram, I don't trust that 'easy prey' all that much, but given that they were conning 'even match' or 'tough' not so long ago, it's still pretty impressive. Also a good thing, because it's getting to the point where I can't farm La Theine anymore because the mobs are 'too weak to be worthwhile'... Oh well, at least I have WHM to level, and being in Windurst for that is good because of the high rewards on killing Crawlers for calculi and silk thread. Plus, if I get really stuck after I've finished with my gardening exploits, there's always farming the Dunes. Yeah, I can do that now - Hill Lizards, Sand Hares and Damselflies. There's not a lot in the Dunes that can really kick my arse now, though I will want to approach from Konschtat Highlands and stay fucking near the zone line, given the fact that the things that can kick my arse? Can really kick my arse.

Oh, further note: that wonderful tune playing in the demon bar in the Buffy episode "Bargaining, pt 1"? When the 'blood rat' in the Hanson T-shirt spills the news that there's a robot standing in for the Slayer in Sunnydale? Static-X. No wonder I like it so much.
