There Is No 'Everyone'
Jun. 14th, 2010 10:43 pmWherein I answer today's meme question without actually answering it.
See, today is Day 08 - A show everyone should watch
. And I can't answer this, because ... well, there is no 'everyone'. The monoculture doesn't work. Making something that everyone will universally enjoy is damn near impossible. I honestly cannot think of a single show that even all the people I consider close friends would enjoy, let alone everyone I actually just know. As to everyone in a larger sense, well ... gods, no. Some of the people I know don't even like TV.
Closest I can come is "The Muppet Show". It's got surrealism, comedy (albeit cheesy comedy), some really fun musical numbers and ... well, art. Besides, it's got Joel Grey reprising his Cabaret role, singing "Wilkommen" in a bar full of Muppets. What's not to love?
Even this, though, I can't apply to everyone. It doesn't appeal to everyone's sense of humour and a few of my friends don't get the Muppets, so ... y'know, maybe they shouldn't. I am not the arbiter of what should or should not be watched, and there is no 'everyone'. So ... your mileage may vary.
In other news, the teaser trailer of the HBO adaptation of "A Game of Thrones" is out - and it could be anything from Gladiator to Beowulf for all anyone knows from looking - and now George RR Martin is forbidding anyone from discussing the books on his 'Not a Blog'. Because they might ruin things for new "readers". It's not quite the same as people who bitched about people spoiling the Lord of the Rings movies, but ... close. The book's been out for fourteen years. Everyone on his blog is a fan of the book series. Now he's ... what, hoping that people will beat a path to his blog on the strength of a teaser trailer that says sweet fuck all? IDEK.
