Spring Cleaning
May. 13th, 2006 01:40 pmToday's task is to try to weed out my Sims 2 custom content so that I can, I dunno, maybe play the game once in awhile until I finally crack the Frankenbox and work out what memory my mobo needs so I can get some new RAM and just not have to worry about it.
This, incidentally, is harder than it sounds. Yes, I have the Sims2Pack Clean Installer, and yes I can just delete any extraneous mess that's found its way into the folder via My Documents blah blah blah. However, the RAM is low enough that the Frankenbox doesn't like dealing with this amount of custom content. At all. As in, Clean Installer crashes, Finder grinds along at a slow crawl and basically I wind up spending a fair bit of time sitting around hoping that the damn thing won't just bork entirely. I am rapidly discovering that there's no damn point in having a 160GB hard drive if your mobo doesn't want to process even a gig's worth of info at any one time.
Now, this mobo was supposed to be all shit-hot, and I guess it is, for what it's got in it. Now, though, I'm pining for my old mobo with its many, many sticks of good RAM which actually ran my damn game. You know, without crashing at least once before it would load, without it taking at least five minutes to load when it finally decides to. When I could run Clean Installer without slowing everything else down. I mean, I know I have a lot of custom content, but this is ridiculous.
So first up, I'm just trying to do a preliminary weed-through to get rid of stuff I don't use. It's going to be hard given that Clean Installer doesn't give you a very good image of the thing you're removing, but it's a start. The second wave will be loading the game and deleting the rest of the crap from there. It's a start, anyway. Plus it'll allow me to take a lunch break between first and second wave of clear-out.
I solemnly swear that I will get the new memory in next payday (Tuesday next). I'll have to crack the box to figure out what the fuck it runs, since I don't think even
cholten99 knows what his old mobo ran, even if we were speaking to ask. Not a huge hardship, as there are a few elements that need reconnecting in there anyway (mainly the DVD drive and, to my eternal shame, the power button), but a pain in the arse nonetheless. At least I have iMisc to get online with if I completely screw things up, and most of the music I can't live without stored on iStress.
Gyah. Geekness.
