Updating from iMisc; I do like having laptop capability. Watching [livejournal.com profile] dodgyhoodoo play Silent Hill 4 with the brand spanking new 'U-No-Die' cheat code. Frankly, that is the only bloody way that most average people would manage to get through this game without a great screaming amount of frustration, and really, I think the makers of ye game dropped the ball a lot on this one. Not in the graphics, mind you -- those are as fantastic as ever, if not more so, but in the execution (no pun intended).

Honestly. There is no way to kill anything in this game. Not enough health drinks or ampoules, no adequate weapons, and an overemphasis on the monster-shooting to well and truly frustrate any player who remembers the old games. Not to mention the fact that killing the ghosts is impossible and there are never enough Swords of Obedience to stick 'em all. There are several nods to the old-style "let's explore the mythos" SH games, but this one tends to be more about, "Lookit the monsters! Lookit how they keeeeel you dead!" Feh.

What happened to the storyline angle being the dominant aspect of the game? When did Silent Hill become all about the monster-bashing? I know they were probably trying something new or trying to appeal to a wider market or something, but that's really not the way to go about it. If you're going to make a shooter, make a shooter where you get an adequate gun (or guns), just enough healing items to ratchet up the tension and make it a challenge without the actual knowledge that there just aren't enough to keep you alive for any length of time, enough save points to take breaks at decent intervals, and a point to all the gore that makes at least a modicum of sense.

The whole point of the Silent Hill games as previously is that you could choose how you dealt with the monsters. You could kill them all, or you could run away, and the ending sometimes changed depending on however many of the fucking things you killed. And there was plot, and riddles, and it made you think. I mean, it made you think something other than "ARGH! ARGH! IT'S GOING TO EAT ME! AND I HAVE NO HEALING ITEMS!" *sigh*

I really hope that the fifth one is better, but then again, I have no idea when the fifth one is going to happen ... or, at this rate, even 'if'. Because, of course, Konami announced that they were going to release it exclusively for the new Nintendo console, whose release date has been 'indefinitely postponed'. Argh.

As [livejournal.com profile] dodgyhoodoo put it, "Silent Hill was never about button-mashing".
