The Stories I Tell
Jul. 12th, 2004 01:29 pmI'm not sure how I'm doing on this Storyteller crap. Oh, don't get me wrong; I'm sure people are enjoying the games. I'm just not sure I'm what a Storyteller's supposed to be.
For one thing, I desperately need to work on combat rounds. Or at least, I think I do. I've never really run a proper group melee hackfest before ... at least not one with dice. The thing is, dice just tell you about success, failure or botch; they dictate nothing about how you botch, so I'm sort of working all that stuff out on the fly, keeping in mind how the characters dress and seem to fight. Eva botched a couple of times and got her axe wedged in the balcony railing; when my roughnecks hit but failed to do damage, they just ripped Lucius' overcoat (but then, given Lucius, it's probably the same as a lethal wound anyway as far as he's concerned). I just don't feel I'm telling the fights well enough. Then again, there's only a few of them who go into any detail on how they're going to hit their opponent, so it's not like I'm getting any help. Maybe I should do what Andy O does; offer an extra die to anyone who gives a good description of what their character's going to do.
Anyway, I need to brush up. But then, it's only been the third session and the first with any real combat rounds at all, so I suppose it's to be expected that I'm a little dissatisfied all the way 'round. But I like the plotlines, and everyone else seems to; I'm looking forward to seeing them negotiate the moral and theological quandries inherent in Molly's recent Awakening.
I'm mostly thinking Mage so I don't have to think work. I think I'm just tired and sore; for some reason, my back's been spasming like mad, and focusing on work will just make me aware of myself and my aching back. And the typing's just begun, so I'm not getting out of here early. And tomorrow's the meeting. Argh.
