30 Days of Blog Meme: Day 4
Favourite Book
Oh, this one is even worse than the "Favourite Song" thing. I mean, I can talk about the ones I've loved since childhood (Anne of Green Gables), I can talk about the ones I devour like gummy bears and re-read three times in a week (most of the Dresden Files books), I can certainly talk about the books that I don't read so much as use as research material but adore regardless (Deadly Doses: A Writer's Guide to Poisons)...
But in the end, it's got to be Rebel Without a Crew, or How a 23-Year-Old Filmmaker With $7000 Became a Hollywood Player, by Robert Rodriguez.
I swear, this is the most inspiring book I've ever read. Here's this 23-year-old guy with a budget he raised by signing himself up for drugs trials, and he worked his arse off. Next thing you know, he's living the fairy tale. And more to the point, he gets across the magnitude of his undertaking with good grace and good humour and "I worked like a bitch and I hoped for something but this? Wow."
Robert Rodriguez's story is well-told and really inspirational for anyone who's going out there to go and do something. Doesn't matter if it's writing, film-making or competitive flower arrangement; reading first-hand how perseverence, imagination and sheer guts can get you is simply awesome.
And so the checklist so far:
Day 01 → your favourite song
Day 02 → your favourite movie
Day 03 → your favourite television program
Day 04 → your favourite book
Day 05 → your favourite quote
Day 06 → whatever tickles your fancy

Day 14 → a non-fictional book
Day 15 → a fanfic
Day 16 → a song that makes you cry (or nearly)

Day 18 → whatever tickles your fancy
Day 19 → a talent of yours
Day 20 → a hobby of yours
