So in my last rantlicious post, I made mention of a fan-made Mass Effect trailer featuring a female Shepard.

I liked it, but I have to wonder why a white person is the default for "hero" yet again (see: my bone with Dragon Age: Origins, and the awkward that ensues when you have a POC as your character).

Okay, I've had this argument already this weekend and I really don't want to have it again. Generally speaking, I'm going to leave the question of Shepard's default ethnicity out there because it's a mine field subject.

However, when it comes to this fanvid ... well, it is a fanvid. I am not going to roll my eyes at someone for making their own customised Shepard look however they want that Shepard to look even if it does not conform to what I would like to see in my Shepard. I mean, I personally don't like the bun her hair is in, for example, and I'm not sure about playing with the Ruthless background. Others probably don't like it that she's not male. Point is that this is not the default Shepard. She's not even the advertising's Shepard. She is someone's customised Shepard and I'm not going to roll my eyes at anyone who made something cool from their game experience, even if it doesn't match mine.

Herp, derp, I mis-read the part that said fan-vid, sorry! (I thought I was actually seeing BioWare's default FemShep, which, going by the promo pic I saw when the voting ended, is white.) No, I don't care if someone chooses to make their character white, of course, and I mistakenly thought this was official. It's a good trailer, though. XD;
