The Crafting Grind

Matters quite obviously improved after yesterday afternoon's nasty. And now I am taking a break from this afternoon's Vana'diel grind to ... well, *squee* about this afternoon's Vana'diel grind, really. It's been a good afternoon in the Deathgnome's little virtual world.
Okay, so a lot of it really was a grind, starting with another day spent in Bastok, buying out as much of the Auction House's stock of shell bugs as I could carry and still have inventory space for other ingredients and then just crafting bug broth until I ran out; lather, rinse, repeat. Still, by the end of all that, I came away with 106k gil or so. Which, as you can probably imagine, was a pretty big deal. Vana'diel is expensive, especially for mages who are trying to level up a craft. Of course, I didn't imagine that this would last very long, this over-100k-triumph, but it's a thing to be proud of.
After that, quick chocobo ride out to San d'Oria. I wanted to go buy that mahogany bed I need for my next mog safe expansion quest somewhere it'd be cheap, and it generally is in San d'Oria owing to the Woodworkers' Guild being in the area. So over I went, and promptly blew 20k on the damnable thing. At least it's useful. Anyway, I got that, and a few more bits of ingredient I needed to continue my everlovin' quest for cooking level 50 ... or at least level 48 so I could get my next rank with the Culinarians' Guild. 50, I did not manage. 48, I eventually did, and then it was off to Windurst to set up the bed, get my new Cooking rank and overall run errands. I need to see if there are any quests I can start up while I'm there.
Anyway, I was a little bit stupid. See, I had looked up what the Apprentice-ranked people needed to hand in for Guild points today, and it said Roast Mutton. I thought, "Cool! I have all this sheep meat kindly donated by
dodgyhoodoo and
weaselbitch, so I can just get the crystals, garlic and marjoram I need, get some guild points and huzzah! Guild points!" I reeeeeeally should have thought of doing all that before I got my new rank, because new rank means new item, and new item means ... *sigh* Well, the money came in handy, anyway - by that time I ... well, okay, I wasn't skint but given the spell scrolls I'm going to have to buy and such, there was bound to be a bit of a pinch somewhere along the way.
Never mind; I checked out the Windurst Auction House and lo and behold, there were shell bugs on sale there. After some rigamarole and juggling, and an awful lot of crafting, I managed to get my gil stores back up above 100k (close to 105k this time). I am currently debating whether I want to pick up all the black magic spells I could get up to level 35, though - while Sleepga is probably worth it, and Aero II and Bio II are must-haves, I'm finding that I don't use the Area of Effect spells much so maybe I don't need Blizzaga. We'll see how it goes when I'm buying said scrolls, I guess.
And see, now I have decisions to make. Do I a) head out to San d'Oria, level up to Cooking 50 on grape juice, do some fishing for awhile to get that levelled and wait until it's time to help
dodgyhoodoo get to Jeuno? Or do I b) head back to Bastok, switch on White Mage, Sneak and Invisible my way through Korroloka Tunnel and finally start levelling BLM again, thus being a far more effective help to
dodgyhoodoo when it's time to help him get to Jeuno? Hrm. I think I'll log back in and decide then. I still have to get as far as Jeuno before I do anything, but that should be easy enough - Warp to Kahzam, where my current homepoint is set, then take the airship back to Jeuno. If I get that stupid A Discerning Eye quest started again on my way back, the trip more than pays for itself, and it's a lot quicker than a chocobo.
I'd forgotten how much fun the Deathgnome could be. It's nice to rediscover, really.
